Finnish cases are one of the most intimidating aspects of the language for beginners. But once you understand the pattern, they become much more manageable. Let’s break them down.
What Are Cases?
In English, we use prepositions (in, on, at, to, from) to show relationships between words. Finnish uses cases instead — endings added to nouns that convey the same information.
For example, “in the house” in English becomes talossa in Finnish — the -ssa ending means “in”.
The 15 Finnish Cases
Grammatical Cases (4)
These are the most essential cases:
- Nominative (-): The basic form. talo = house
- Genitive (-n): Possession. talon = of the house
- Partitive (-a/-ä): Partial amount. taloa = some of the house
- Accusative (same as nominative/genitive): Direct object. talo = the house (as object)
Locative Cases (6)
These show location:
- Inessive (-ssa/-ssä): Inside. talossa = in the house
- Elative (-sta/-stä): Out of. talosta = from the house
- Illative (-an/-en/-Vn): Into. taloon = into the house
- Adessive (-lla/-llä): On. talolla = on the house
- Ablative (-lta/-ltä): From. talolta = from the house
- Allative (-lle): To. talolle = to the house

- Essive (-na/-nä): As. talona = as a house
- Translative (-ksi): Becoming. taloksi = into a house

How to Learn Cases
Don’t try to memorize all 15 at once. Here’s a better approach:
- Start with the grammatical cases (nominative, genitive, partitive) — these are the most common
- Add locative cases (inessive, elative, illative) — these are used daily
- Learn the rest gradually as you encounter them
Learn cases through real sentences, not grammar tables. For example:
- Asun Suomessa. (I live in Finland.) — inessive
- Tulen Suomesta. (I come from Finland.) — elative
- Menen Suomeen. (I go to Finland.) — illative
