YKI Test: Everything You Need to Know

The YKI test (Yleinen kielitutkinto) is the official Finnish language proficiency exam. If you're applying for Finnish citizenship, you'll need to pass it at level 3 or higher. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is the YKI Test?

The YKI test is administered by the Finnish National Agency for Education. It assesses your Finnish (or Swedish) language skills at levels 1-6, which correspond to the CEFR levels A1-C2.

YKI Levels Explained

For citizenship, you need level 3 or higher.

Test Format

The YKI test has four sections:

1. Reading Comprehension

• Duration: 60 minutes
• Tasks: Reading texts and answering questions
• Levels: Tested at intermediate level

2. Listening Comprehension

• Duration: 30-40 minutes
• Tasks: Listening to audio and answering questions
• Levels: Tested at intermediate level

3. Writing

• Duration: 60 minutes
• Tasks: Writing short texts (email, message, essay)
• Levels: Assessed on a 6-point scale

4. Speaking

• Duration: 20-30 minutes
• Tasks: Conversation and role-play
• Levels: Assessed on a 6-point scale

After the Test
