How Ahmed Learned Finnish in 6 Months
Ahmed moved from Dubai to Helsinki with zero Finnish. Six months later, he passed the YKI test. Here's his story.
Ahmed moved from Dubai to Helsinki for work in January 2025. He spoke Arabic and English, but zero Finnish. Six months later, he passed the YKI test at level 3. Here's how he did it.
The Beginning
"When I arrived in Helsinki, I couldn't even say 'hello' in Finnish," Ahmed recalls. "Everyone at work spoke English, but I wanted to integrate. I wanted to belong."
Ahmed's goal was clear: pass the YKI test at level 3 within a year, for citizenship. He gave himself 6 months.
The Plan
Ahmed signed up for Lingeva and created a structured plan:
- 3 live classes per week with Maija, a certified Finnish teacher
- Daily AI tutoring for 20 minutes during his commute
- Flashcards for 15 minutes at lunch
- Finnish media in the evenings (Yle news, Finnish Netflix shows)
Month 1-2: Building the Foundation
The first two months were the hardest. Ahmed focused on:
- The 500 most common Finnish words
- Basic pronunciation (especially ä, ö, and the rolled r)
- Present tense verbs
- Cases through patterns (not grammar tables)
"I made so many mistakes," Ahmed says. "But Maija was patient. She corrected me gently and I kept going."
Month 3-4: Gaining Confidence
By month 3, Ahmed could:
- Have basic conversations
- Order food in Finnish
- Understand simple news headlines
- Write short emails
He started speaking Finnish at the grocery store and in cafes. "The first time a cashier understood me, I was so happy," he says.
Month 5-6: Preparing for YKI
The last two months were focused on YKI preparation:
- Practice tests under time pressure
- Writing exercises (emails, short essays)
- Speaking practice with role-plays
- Listening comprehension with Yle Radio Suomi
The Test
Ahmed took the YKI test in July. He was nervous but prepared.
"Reading and listening went well. Writing was okay. Speaking was the hardest — my mind went blank at first. But I took a breath and continued."
The Result
Four weeks later, Ahmed received his results: Level 3 in all sections.
"I called my wife and cried. Six months ago, I couldn't say 'hello.' Now I passed the YKI test."
Ahmed's Advice
1. Speak from day one. Don't wait until you're ready. 2. Be consistent. 15 minutes daily beats hours weekly. 3. Get a good teacher. Maija made all the difference. 4. Don't fear mistakes. Every mistake is a lesson. 5. Immerse yourself. Finnish media, Finnish radio, Finnish everything.
Start Your Journey
Ahmed's story shows what's possible with the right approach and consistent effort. You can do it too.
