English pronunciation can be tricky, especially for non-native speakers. Here are the most common mistakes and how to fix them.

The "Th" Sound

The "th" sound (as in "think" and "this") doesn't exist in many languages. There are two types:

  • Voiceless (think, bath, thumb): Place tongue between teeth and blow
  • Voiced (this, the, mother): Same position but with vocal cords vibrating

Practice: Say "the thirty-three thieves" slowly, then faster.

Short vs Long Vowels

English has many vowel pairs where length changes meaning:

  • ship vs sheep
  • bit vs beat
  • full vs fool
  • cap vs cab

Practice: Record yourself saying minimal pairs and compare with native speakers.

Silent Letters

English has many silent letters that trip up learners:

  • knight (the k is silent)
  • island (the s is silent)
  • hour (the h is silent)
  • psychology (the p is silent)

Word Stress

English is stress-timed, meaning stressed syllables occur at regular intervals. Getting stress wrong can make you unintelligible:

  • PHOto (not phoTO)
  • imPORtant (not IMportant)
  • univerSITY (not UNIversity)

Rule: When in doubt, stress the first syllable of nouns and adjectives, and the last syllable of verbs.

Connected Speech

Native speakers don't say each word separately. They connect words:

  • "going to" → "gonna"
  • "want to" → "wanna"
  • "don't you" → "doncha"

This is why listening comprehension can be hard even when you know all the words.

Intonation

English uses rising and falling intonation to convey meaning:

  • Rising at the end: Questions, uncertainty
  • Falling at the end: Statements, certainty
  • Rise-fall: Lists (rising for all but the last item, which falls)

How to Improve

1. Listen actively: Pay attention to how native speakers pronounce words 2. Record yourself: Compare your pronunciation with native speakers 3. Practice with a teacher: Get real-time feedback 4. Use AI tutoring: Practice 24/7 with instant correction 5. Shadow native speakers: Listen and repeat immediately after them
